Who needs an ML5 Seafarer medical?

An ML5 Seafarer medical certificate is required for:

  • Crew on seagoing Domestic Passenger Vessel (Class VI or VI(A))
  • Master or Crew of a small commercial vessel (area category 2-6 – up to 60 miles from a safe haven)
  • Master or Crew of a fishing vessel under 24 metres
  • Application or renewal of MCA Boatmaster’s Licence (BML) Certificate
  • Application for Royal Yachting Association (RYA) commercial endorsement, working no more than 60 miles from UK shore
Do you offer ENG1 medicals?

Unfortunately we do not currently provide ENG1 medicals

What does the ML5 medical involve?

An ML5 medical examination includes:

  • Eye test (including colour vision)
  • Blood pressure check
  • Review of your medical history
  • Questions about medications you take
  • General physical assessment

The doctor then completes the ML5 medical certificate

How often do I need am ML5 medical?
  • If aged under 65 years and with no medical issues, the medical certificate will be valid for 5 years
  • If aged over 65 years, the certificate will be valid for 1 year
  • If referred to an ML5 Medical Assessor, the length of your medical certificate will depend on your medical condition
What do I need to bring to my appointment?

For all ML5 medicals, please bring:

  • Photographic ID
  • NHS app or medical summary printout from your GP practice 
  • Glasses/contact lenses (and prescription if available)
  • ML5 medical form (unless you have opted for forms to be provided in clinic during the booking process)

How long does an ML5 medical take?

Each medical usually takes around 15 minutes, but may take longer if you have a complex medical history

What happens after the medical?

If all questions are answered ‘No’ on the form and no further information is flagged, the doctor can complete the ML5 Medical Certificate and give it to you at the time of the appointment.

If any questions are answered ‘Yes’, or any medical conditions are noted in Section 12, your report will need to be referred on to an MCA ML5 Medical Assessor. They will make a decision based on the your fitness to undertake your role and the Medical Standards.
